Reply with quote | #91 | I headed out to University Lake at 6:30 am to take one last shot at one of the lake's fins. I have caught one there the two previous years, but this year I did not land a single lake Bowfin in 4 trips. The weather was brutal and cold, with driving wind and rain. I took shelter under a bridge and kept after the fish, but only managed a b@ss. So I gave up and headed home, but the rain started to slow down. So I resolved to duck into the Lower Little Creek Impoundment for a few casts.
I started with a Rapala Glass Rap crank bait and it produced a small b@ss in the main channel. I lost the lure and tied on a Rattlin' Rap, headed to the main section, and started working the shallow water. This fin grabbed the lure about 3 feet from the bank and headed for Tijuana. I set the hook like I meant it and the fight was on. The fish measured 24 1/4" and I guess it weighed a solid 5 lbs.
And once again, I am within striking distance of Mike's lead.

Reply with quote | #93 | I was within 3 points of catching Mike on Friday, but he turned around and caught two big fins this weekend. He's probably still out fishing as I write this trying to get a few more, because I told him I was going to get out and close the gap again. And that's what I did.
There are have been stories of a few big fins breaking people off at Lower Little Creek of late, so I went out and decided to throw the heavy artillery at them: deep diving Berkley Frenzy crankbaits. I hooked this fish on my second cast with the lure. It rolled a few times near the bank and got wrapped in my line, making for an easy landing, but it put up a great fight before that happened.
The fish measured 29" and weighed 8.5 lbs. It is one of my biggest of the season, and Bowfin number 39 overall.

Reply with quote | #94 | Wow, I've been on a 2 week skunk. Went out Saturday with my little Brother and caught a 24.5 incher. We went back Sunday and I caught a 25 inch fin. Came in with a third on Monday at 28 inches. All caught at Lower Little Creek. The first 2 on Rapala DT-4's the last on a Rapala Rattletrap.
I have to say that 28 inch fin was the ugliest critter I've ever seen. It's head was way oversized and it looked like it had a run in with a trolling motor. Poor thing.
Lure: Rapala DT4, Rattletrap
24.5" 5lbs
25" 5.5lbs
28" 6lbs
I caught them at Lower Little Creek Waterfowl Impoundment.

Reply with quote | #95 | I was out today for a few minutes and landed this massive Bowfin. My biggest yet. My hands were shaking, I couldn't breathe. I tried to get my fish grabber on her while she was in the water but her mouth was too big. I've lost so many bowfin in that hole. I think I lost this same fish a few weeks ago. What a beauty.
It was an incredible fight. I was listening to some music...zoned out and when she hit I thought I had hooked a beaver or something. I got all caught up in my headphone cord. I know I looked like an idiot.
Once I saw how big she was I couldn't take a breathe until I got as far away from the water with her as I could. What a blast.
I caught her at Lower Little Creek Waterfowl Impoundment in Durham.
Lure: Rapala Rattletrap
